Assam grieves singer Suman Mahanta’s death

The news of sudden death of singer Suman Mahanta and other 10 persons has whipped up a tear-soaked reaction from all and sundry in Assam.

Eleven persons including singer Suman Mahanta were killed when the vehicle in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck at Dhupdhara in Goalpara district early today morning. The artists group was returning to Guwahati after performing at a function in Matia.



The Tata Winger passenger vehicle (AS
01CC 8435) was hit by a speeding truck at Dhupdhara, police said. Nine persons including singer Suman Mahanta died on the spot while other two succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.

Another seriously injured person, Gautam Sarma, was shifted to GMCH in Guwahati.

The deceased have been identified as Rajib Kalita, Jagadish, Mukul, Dipak Rabha, Raju and Nripen. Four others are yet to be identified.

As soon as the news spread, close family members, relatives and admirers, including some of the singers of Assam, rushed to Suman’s residence in Tezpur to convey their condolences to the family members.

Meanwhile, several organizations condoled the death of singer Suman Mahanta and other 10 persons.
