Dreams come true for a Guwahati Girl Niyor Saikia

She is just 13 but has already acted in five films — and now Hollywood has come calling. Guwahati girl Niyor Saikia has pipped 600 others from the US, Canada, Nepal and India to land herself the lead role in Academy Award-winning director Jeffrey D. Brown’s Sold — the tale of a teenager sold into prostitution and how she finally finds redemption.

The Class VIII student of Maria’s Public School, Guwahati is the daughter of singers Probin and Rasmirekha Saikia.

At age six, Niyor played a hearing and speech impaired Kashmiri girl in director Jahnu Barua’s Hindi film, Butterfly Chase (which is yet to release).

Then, she honed her acting skills at Guwahati's Seagull Theatre Academy, under the guidance of National School of Drama graduates Baharul and Bhagirathi Islam. She next acted in Manju Barua’s Joymoti and Aai Kot Nai and in Rajib Bhattacharjya’s Ami Asomiya. She also starred in Joyshree Saikia's Hindi film Main Ganga, which was awarded best film at the International Independent Film and Video festival.
British actress Emma Thompson, who has acted in films like Sense and Sensibility and Remains of the Day, is producing Sold.

Shooting for the film wrapped up in December last year.
